My name is Jonas Lembrechts, PostDoctoral fellow in the Centre of Excellence on Plants and Ecosystems at the University of Antwerp in Belgium and co-coordinator of the Mountain Invasion Research Network. I study plant species distributions – mostly in mountains – and the effect of humans on these distributions.
On top of the world
Here on ‘On top of the world’, I share my adventures and discoveries. I created this blog in October 2013, when I started my PhD at the University of Antwerp, to combine my passion for ecology, writing and photography and illustrate all aspects of a PhD-student’s life. Now, the website has grown into a way to communicate all our (me and my colleagues) scientific discoveries and fieldwork adventures to you.
Mountain ecology is a wonderful journey, that leads me to places as far as north- and southpole, and everything in between. I climb mountains, struggle my way through forests, gasp at aurora’s in starry nights and explore unknown horizons, all on a hunt to answer my questions on why plants are growing where they grow. I thus stand on top of the world, look down on it and question everything I see, because that’s what scientists do.
This blog shares my experience. It wants to give a glimpse of the adventures of an ecologist, from start to finish, and serve as a unique combination of fieldwork adventures and scientific communication. You can see me as a photographing ecologist: the pictures and personal stories provide the background for information over ecology, invasive species, global change and the interesting biology of mountains. I strongly believe in the importance of my work and the communication of it to a non-scientific public, which I try to make an interesting read for everyone, with the help of photography.
So enjoy your visit to my blog and let me take you on a fascinating trip trough a mountain ecologists’ life. Believe me, it is worth the stay, because there is still a lot to explore!
I get and got financial support from the Flemish government through the FWO, from the Centre of Excellence on Plants and Ecosystems at the University of Antwerp, an International Collaborative Research Grant from The Swedish Research Council, INTERACT and ActUA vzw.
